Welcome to Year 1

Class Teacher: Mrs Emily Paskin

Welcome to Year 1. Our PE days are Wednesdays and Thursdays, and our reading books changing is currently a Thursday. We are continuing to move children onto the Accelerated Reader programme, and you will be informed when this happens. Your child’s home learning will be sent out on a Friday, and can be returned by the following Thursday.


In the first part of the Spring Term our learning journey question is:

How did Queen Elizabeth II become a monarch?

We will access our learning through the gateway of Leadership covering History knowledge and skills, alongside meeting our writing objectives. 

In our Writing we will:

  • Begin to form lower case letters correctly using cursive handwriting

  • Rehearse our ideas before writing

  • Compose our sentences orally before writing

  • Re-read our writing to check for errors

  • Leave finger spaces between words

  • Punctuation sentences using a capital letter and a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark

  • Sequence sentences to form short narratives

  • Use joining words and joining clauses with words such as ‘and’

In our Reading we will:

  • Apply phonic knowledge and skills to decode words

  • Read aloud accurate books of appropriate phonic knowledge

  • Re-read these books to build up their fluency and confidence in work reading

  • Drawing upon what they already know or on background information and vocabulary provided by the teacher

  • Become very familiar with key stories, retelling them and considering their particular characteristics

  • Making inference on the basis of what is being said and done

In our Maths we will:

  • Counting, reading and writing numbers to 20

  • Identifying one more and one less than a given number

  • Identifying and representing numbers using objects

  • Representing and using number bonds to 20 

  • Reading, writing and interpreting mathematical statements involving addition, subtraction and equals signs

  • Adding and subtracting one digit and two digit numbers to 20

  • Solving one step problems that involve addition and subtraction

  • Those working at Greater Depth will be working on reasoning skills including explanations of mathematical concepts.
