Welcome to Year 6

Class Teacher: Mrs Annette Smith

This term in Year 6, we will learn how to be Historians. Through our learning question,

‘What made Admiral Lord Nelson an inspirational leader?’
we will:

  • Develop the skills needed to be a great historian.

  • Suggest accurate reasons why aspects of the past have been represented in different ways (in particular the actions of Admiral Lord Nelson in the Royal Navy) in order to answer our learning question.

  • Use a range of sources to learn about the people from the past.

  • Understand why there may be differing views about historical events.

  • Choose reliable sources of primary & secondary evidence to collect information about the past.

  • Evaluate the usefulness and accurateness of different sources of evidence.

  • Explain why there is often not a single answer to historical questions.

  • Form our own opinions about historical events from a range of sources.

We will develop our Leadership skills:

  • We will explore the qualities needed to be a great leader. We will focus particularly on the battle of Trafalgar and the reasons why Admiral Lord Nelson was such a well-respected leader.

  • We will develop our skills in questioning by asking questions that consider implications and consequences of actions. We will continually reflect upon our knowledge and how we are developing integrity and grit in ourselves.

Our English writing will support our learning enquiry – we will write detailed descriptive and narrative pieces. During Guided Reading sessions, we will use non-fiction texts to gain key information about the Georgian era and Nelson’s role in this. We will follow the National Curriculum for Maths this term, which will include geometry, decimals, percentage, ratio and proportion.
